Get to know Nova Concrete

The cost of a concrete pad for a shed runs from roughly $600 to $4,000 or more, depending on thickness, reinforcement spec, sub-base condition, and site access. That range is wide for a reason: a 10x10 broom-finish pad on level, stable soil is a very different project than a 16x24 slab with 4,000 PSI mix and rebar grid on a sloped lot that needs grading. Nova Concrete has handled both ends of that spectrum across the Twin Cities metro for 12 years. We're fully insured, and every installation carries a 1-year warranty. Call (612) 462-2610 before you pour a single yard.

Concrete installation covers a broad scope: garage slabs, driveways, walkways, basement slabs, shed pads, and structural footings. What drives cost up is thicker slab specs (4 inches is standard residential; 6 inches for heavy equipment or vehicle loads), wire mesh versus rebar reinforcement, the need for compacted aggregate sub-base work, and finish type. Stamped concrete and decorative finishes sit at the upper end. On the lower end, a simple utility slab on a prepped, accessible site. Most residential projects land somewhere between $1,000 and $6,000 plus. Every job is different. Contact Nova Concrete for an accurate estimate.

What we do

What Every Solid Concrete Installation Requires

There are no shortcuts in concrete work. These are the structural steps that determine whether a slab lasts 30 years or starts cracking inside five.

Sub-Base Preparation

A compacted aggregate sub-base, typically 4 to 6 inches of crushed Class 5 gravel, is non-negotiable. Skip it and the slab settles unevenly. Most cracked slabs we see weren't poured wrong. They were graded wrong from the start.

Proper Mix Specification

Minnesota freeze-thaw cycles are hard on concrete. We spec a minimum 4,000 PSI mix with air-entrainment for exterior slabs. That air entrainment gives the slab room to expand without spalling through a hard winter.

Reinforcement Selection

Wire mesh handles light residential loads. Rebar, typically number 4 bar on 18-inch centers, handles vehicle traffic, heavy equipment, and anything bearing structural weight. We'll tell you which is right for your application. Honestly, a lot of contractors upsell rebar where mesh is sufficient.

Control Joints

Concrete shrinks as it cures. Control joints are scored or sawn into the slab at calculated intervals to direct that shrinkage cracking where it can't be seen or cause damage. Missing them is one of the most common installation errors.

Curing Time and Protection

Fresh concrete needs 28 days to reach full design strength. We protect poured slabs from premature drying and freezing during the critical first 72 hours. Don't let anyone put foot traffic on a slab the same day it's poured.

Finish and Drainage Slope

Every exterior slab needs a minimum 1/8-inch-per-foot slope away from structures to shed water. A flat pad that pools is a liability in a Minnesota winter. We set the form elevation before the truck rolls.

Shed Pads and Utility Slabs: What You Actually Need

A shed foundation is one of the most common concrete jobs we get called for, and it's one where people regularly overbuild or underbuild. A standard storage shed on flat, stable ground does fine with a 4-inch unreinforced slab on compacted gravel. Add a heavy steel building, a riding mower, or a workshop with equipment, and you're looking at 6-inch depth with wire mesh at minimum. We won't charge you for rebar you don't need. We also won't let you pour a pad that won't hold what you plan to put on it. If the ground underneath is soft, expansive clay, or has poor drainage, we address the sub-base first. It adds cost upfront. It prevents a $4,000 problem in year three. The Twin Cities metro has a lot of clay-heavy soil, and we've seen what happens when that detail gets skipped. Call (612) 462-2610 and we'll walk through what your specific site needs.
Residential and Commercial Projects: One Crew, Full Scope

Residential and Commercial Projects: One Crew, Full Scope

Nova Concrete handles commercial and residential projects under the same roof. Whether it's a retail parking apron, an industrial floor slab, or a backyard patio, the structural principles don't change. What changes is scale, load spec, and finish requirements. Commercial floors often require a higher PSI mix, fiber reinforcement, and flatness tolerances measured in F-numbers. Residential work prioritizes aesthetics alongside durability. We've completed both types of projects across the metro for over a decade. Olidia Nova stays involved in project planning, which is why our specs don't get lost between sales and field crews. You get one point of contact who knows the job.

FAQ

Concrete Installation Questions We Get Every Week

These are real questions from real customers. Straight answers, no filler.

How much does it cost to lay a 20x20 concrete slab? +
A 20x20 slab is 400 square feet. At standard 4-inch depth with a broom finish and compacted gravel sub-base, expect a range of roughly $2,000 to $5,500 depending on site conditions, reinforcement requirements, mix spec, and finish type. Decorative finishes like stamped concrete push that higher. Removal of an existing slab adds to the scope. Every job is different. Contact Nova Concrete for an accurate estimate.
What is the 1 2 3 rule for concrete? +
The 1-2-3 rule is a field mix ratio: 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, 3 parts aggregate by volume. It produces a general-purpose mix in the 3,000 PSI range. For exterior slabs in Minnesota's climate, we typically specify a higher-strength mix with air-entrainment from a ready-mix plant. Batch plant concrete has consistent quality control that a field-mixed batch can't reliably achieve.
How much does it cost to install concrete? +
Concrete installation across residential applications typically runs from $6 to $18 or more per square foot installed, depending on thickness, reinforcement, sub-base prep, finish type, and site access. Simple utility slabs sit at the lower end. Decorative finishes, steep grades, and demolition of existing concrete push costs up. We scope each job individually. Contact Nova Concrete for a specific figure.
How do you install concrete properly in a Minnesota climate? +
Exterior concrete in Minnesota requires an air-entrained mix to survive freeze-thaw cycling without surface spalling. The sub-base must drain well so water doesn't collect beneath the slab and heave it in winter. We avoid pouring when temperatures will drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit within 24 hours, and we use insulated blankets when a pour is close to that threshold. Getting this wrong shows up within the first two winters.
What thickness does a concrete shed pad need to be? +
For a standard storage shed with light loads, 4 inches of concrete on a compacted gravel sub-base is sufficient. If you're storing a vehicle, heavy equipment, or building a workshop with machinery, spec up to 6 inches and add wire mesh or rebar depending on point-load expectations. The shed manufacturer's specs sometimes call out a required slab thickness. Check those before we pour.
Do I need a permit to pour a concrete slab? +
In most Twin Cities metro municipalities, a concrete slab for a shed or accessory structure requires a building permit if the structure it supports exceeds a certain square footage, typically 200 square feet. Driveways connecting to public roads may require a right-of-way or curb-cut permit. Requirements vary by city. We can help you determine what your jurisdiction requires before work starts.
